Week 12 - Research Assignment

For week 12, I chose a well-renowned artist based in Chicago. Her name is Silvia Malagrino, and she was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has a wide range of work from photography, installation, video, and film, and she amalgamates critical thinking with poetry and metaphors with documentation. Over her career, Malagrino utilizes the realm of memories and dreams; she uses them as the subsoil for her art to make connections between fact and fiction. She also uses it to "regain that subjectivity as it is a pivotal part of historical testimony." Malagrino has had her work shown in numerous locations here's just some:

  • The Museum of Art Institute of Chicago
  • The Museum of Contemporary Photography
  • The Gene Siskel Theatre in Chicago, IL
  • The Palais de Glace National Art Gallery
  • The Centro Cultural La Recoleta
  • The Centro Cultural de la Cooperacion  Floreal Gorini in Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • The Museo de Arte Monderno La Tertulia, Cali, Colombia
  • The Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy
  • The Teneo of Madrid, Spain
  • The Rochester Institute of Technology, NY
  • And many more!
Silvia Malagrino has also won multiple awards and prizes, such as:
  • The CINE Golden Eagle Award
  • 2005, the Lorenzo De Medici First Prize Award in New Media for "The Stream of Life"
    • At the 5th Edition of the Florence Biennale in Italy
  • The Silver Circle Award for Excellence in Teaching
  • Several Campus Research Board Grants
  • Two awards from the Council of Excellence in Teaching and Learning
  • An Equipment for Research and Teaching from the Chancellor's Office
  • A grant for Research on Women and Gender
  • Two Foreign Travel Awards
  • A grant in aid from the Institute for the Humanities
  • A grant from the Great Cities Institute for Scholars' Fellowship
Silvia Malagrino is currently a professor in Photography at the School of Art and Art History of the University of Illinois at Chicago and a recipient of a 2012 Illinois Secretary of State Distinguished Artist Award for outstanding contributions to cultural and community leadership. Her work captures intervals of time and space in different cities with each of her photographs. Her photographs are not compiled together within reason; sometimes, the surrounding environment offers an immediate single view into various planes of time and space. Silvia's camera captures sixteen consecutive shots on a single frame to create instantaneous grids. Silvia is committed to serving students from all levels of personal and artistic development.
