Paul Piorkowski - Week 11 Research Assignment

The artist I chose to share this week is Andreas Christanetoff, who uses the nickname Armaada. Born in Smolensk, Russia, in 1985, Armaada specializes in making album covers for various metal bands, and has himself played in a few bands as a guitarist, including the slamming deathcore band Ammut (which he has been in since this year), and the symphonic death metal band Pantianak (from 2004 to 2005), as well as having filled in on bass for the heavy metal band Jinx in 2009. He has been posting his artwork on Instagram since 2017, but has been providing art for bands since 2015 (from what information I was able to find). He uses photoshop to make his artworks.

I've chosen to share two artworks this week, The first artwork I chose to share is the piece used for the 2019 album Chapter of the Vermin Domain by the slam band Vermicular Incubation. It depicts a flooded city, with the tentacles of some kind of sea monster tear the city apart while lightning strikes in the sky, which captures the unrelenting brutality of the album.

The second artwork I chose to share this week was used for the 2020 album In Chains of Torment by the blackened death metal band Alone in the Mist. It depicts a man chained by his arms and wrapped in curtains, while three ravens devour the flesh from his skull. The imagery of the ravens captures the solemn aspects of the album from the black metal influences, while the fact that they're devouring a man's flesh embodies the brutality of the death metal influences.
