Week 6 Research Assignment Kyle Dann

Tom Hubbard started using digital abstract after he spent his entire career using realistic photography. He was a television director in Norfolk and Atlanta before becoming a newspaper photographer in Atlanta and Cincinnati. From 1966 until 1978 he worked at Cincinnati Enquirer, where he won 22 Ohio awards for photojournalism. Tom also won 2 national awards, including a National Press Photographers Association award for best photo story coverage of the Senate Watergate Hearings. He says that he now brings abstract elements to his images and makes them the subject of the piece, instead of having them in the background. He will work with the same piece until he can see a theme in his work. Even if the work looks abstract to people, he is still able to see a theme or story to the piece. Tom creates these themes from past experiences and says that creating good photography will show emotional responses in the work. He will work until he can find an emotion in his work. This image above was the piece that stood out to my eye. It has lots of dull colors in the image with lots of shapes and designs. When looking at this piece, my attention went straight to the middle, where my head came up with two eyes and a mouth. What makes art like this so fascinating is that you have no idea what the artist can see in the image or what other people can see. Your imagination creates a story in your head and it is very hard to unsee it.
