Week 13 Research

Michael Sussna is an American digital artist. He was born in New Jersey, in 1950. He gained his bachelor's at Sonoma State University, his master's from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and his doctorate from UC San Diego. Despite all of his past education in computer science and similar fields, he never studied art. He is a self-taught artist and he has created fractal art ever since 1985. It is unsure how he creates his artwork since he describes it as "geometric, yet organic." It's more abstract and original than traditional fractals. 'Hacienda' and 'Moonlight Surface'  are the pieces you see below. The first thing that I notice and appreciate is that there is no color in these images. This results in more of a focus on the fractal design rather than distractions around the design. I particularly like that the hacienda piece looks very similar to a computer chip, giving it a more science-fiction look. In moonlight surface, there is a clear inspiration and look to the surface of the moon. The random array of the "craters" that are spread throughout the piece is a unique aspect that I liked looking at while researching.
