Week 12 Research Assignment
Pavel Melnichuk is a Ukrainian artist born in 1972. He lives in Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Chernivtsi is known and named as 'Little Paris' because of its architecture and culture. Melnichuk is a self-taught artist, he started with color photography and was inspired by digital technologies that fused science and art. He started processing some photo scans and the results were as good as the idea. He and his artwork found success in Ukraine as well as in the United Kingdom. After his success with photbased artwork, he decided to start from scratch. He used Wacom tablet and digital brushes in Adobe Photoshop. The results were just as successful. He also created some artwork combining his digital photographs and from scratch art. He describes the paintings to be about himself, and his positivity. I have picked two of his creations, 'Creature', and 'Fruit'. Both of these works are part of his digital brush painting, which I mentioned and explained earlier. I selected these works because I am a fan of the abstract ideas that he uses for these works. Creature can be looked at in a multitude of ways. I see two faces in the middle of the painting. Right above it though, one can make some kind of bird or vulture. Fruit is even more abstract. It's red color and vibrance dominance over the painting make it seem like there should be a fruit as its center, like an apple or strawberry. I personally can't really make a clear-cut subject in the painting, but it is fun to examine and try to find something new every time you see it.
I could not find a website for Melnichuk's work, including the website that's watermarked in his work, so here is his MOCA gallery: https://moca.virtual.museum/melnichuk/melnichuk01.htm
