Week 8 Research

This week I am talking about Scottish artist Will Johnson. Will was born in the Shetland Islands, a small array of islands north of Scotland and west of Norway. He was raised there and still lives there today. He is a self-taught digital artist. He uses very familiar programs, Apophysis and Ultra Fractal. He uses both of these to find and create fractals that have a different picture feel to them, rather than the traditional fractal. I chose two of his works, "Cutting Torch" and "Dream Staircase". In Cutting Torch, there are two squares, both being cut through by some kind of torch. I really like how only the outside of the squares is exposed by this torch, so it gives the illusion that there is only one torch cutting through both boxes. The second, it shows an unique linear fractal of stairs. I like its unique component that the stairs don't go forever, instead they turn into a different linear design.

The artist doesn't have a website, but here is his MOCA gallery: Will Johnson MOCA Gallery Link
