Week 9 Research Assignment - Ian Garcia
For this week, I decided to research one of the Grandmasters of MOCA; I chose Werner Hornung. Werner was born in 1945 in a small town in southern Germany. Right now, Werner is a digital Postwar and Contemporary artist that is based in France right now. He then learned graphic design at an agency based in Switzerland, as well as he opened his own advertising studio. Werner had moved to Paris in 1970. He created his art under the pseudonym "Eifelturm." Werner makes modern, "old-fashioned" paintings to amaze himself. He mixes different elements with his digital creations to make his style. When he was growing up in the pop culture during the 70/80's, creating and putting together collages was his thing. He used glue and scissors to cut out little pieces and bits of old books and magazines, which is how he made art when he was younger. Then, since working on the computer began in 1994, he would scan his collages and enhance them in Photoshop, as well as Kai's Power tools. Werner states that his favorite software is "FLAIR." He also mentions, "It is situated on the right side of my brain..." I believe he means that the right side of his brain is more used for creativity and imagination, but I am not 100% sure. Werner's work has been offered at auctions on multiple occasions; his work prices range from 660 USD to 1,260 USD, depending on the size and the medium of the artwork. His record price in 2019 was the piece that went for 1,260 USD, named "Come and Dance with Me," this piece was sold at Sotheby's New York in 2022.
Unfortunately, I could not find a specific website that belonged or dedicated itself to Werner Hornung.
