Week 8 Research (Toby M)
For this week, I decided to do research on the artist Russel Scott-Skinner and also chose a piece of art from him. Russel was originally from South East London as well as North Kent but was born in South East London in 1979. He moved to North Kent once he hit the age of 10. So when people ask where he is from, he says "A bit of everywhere" since he's moved around quite a bit. Scott-Skinner has been an artist professionally since he was 21 years old, but his main passion has always been the visuals so before he was always paid, he was shooting lots of photography and creating design work or painting pictures for the people around him. "My work took off from here into being trained up in the photographic studios in South East London, which in turn led onto me building and selling my own two successful photographic studios. I've also been fortunate to have worked commercial video and photography in Morocco and France" (Scott-Skinner). Russel, now a famous artist, has work done all around the world and he is extremely proud of it, and for all people to see.
Artist Quote:
"My artwork is all about reflecting the beautiful energy in nature so that a piece of it can be taken for the home. This could be a photographic print or a large original painting. My paintings are created differently. They are grown and developed through time rather than painted to give them a quality that truly reflects how nature sculps her landscape. I create a layer then wash it down and erode it, then do it again and again and again. Sometimes they come together in a day, a week or a month, some I'm still working on" (Scott-Skinner).
I chose this piece of art by him because it reminds me of Fractals and what we are learning today. It looks like a mirror image of a tree that has perfect symmetry. And I have also realized that it is not just the tree but the background as well with the blue sky and pink clouds. It really intrigued me to use this because it relates to what we are doing in class and all getting better at, creating fractal images.
