Week 6 Research Assignment

For this week, I chose to go with the artist Debi Peralta. While I was scrolling through MOCA, I stumbled across one of her pieces and was immediately intrigued. Debi is actually a self-taught artist within the digital medium. She "dabbled" in fine arts at a university while she was actually pursuing her degree in Anthropology. Using digital design and art tools since they became available, Debi's art has a unique approach, which is what caught my attention. She says she likes to blend genres within her work, but she tries to add special depths of colors and illumination also. Lighting is very important to her pieces, as she feels it can make or break the piece itself. She wants her art to be able to captivate the audience. For us to step out of our world as she puts it, and enjoy ourselves while taking in the art. After reading about how she uses light and depth, it reminded me of the filters assignment we had within the first couple of weeks of class. With my filters, I too tried playing around with lighting and depth within the colors to get different looks and tones. I think that is why I was attracted to the artwork so much because I too find that to be such an important part of the art. I also found it really fascinating how digital arts was not her main focus, yet she is able to produce amazing pieces like the one below. It just goes to show that a hobby can go far if you put the work in and enjoy it enough. I enjoyed looking at her exhibit on MOCA's website, she has a lot to share and I hope you are able to enjoy her art for yourselves!
