Week One Assignment Ahmand Tillery
For this assignment I chose Artist Carol Caputo. Carol Caputo, a New York-based "street" artist, is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York. With a background in graphic design and extensive experience as an art director, she brings a unique approach to her creative pursuits. Her artistic journey takes her through the bustling streets of New York, where she is armed with a camera, rubbing pad, crayon, and sketchbook. In these urban surroundings, she captures her impressions of the city's diverse neighborhoods. Once back in her studio, she employs a distinctive method, where these collected images (or fragments of them) are meticulously collaged and layered using digital tools like Photoshop.
Carol's creative process is deeply rooted in her surroundings. She eloquently states, "The street provides me with everything I need to create my drawings and paintings." Her encounters with various scenes and people become a rich database stored in her subconscious. As she navigates the cityscape, the vibrant energy of the crowds fuels her inspiration. Each neighborhood offers a unique visual palette, and she leverages this diversity to infuse her work with variety. Equipped with her camera and sketchbooks, Carol transforms the seemingly ordinary into fluid abstractions. Her environment is not just observed; it's intimately experienced.
