Week Five Research Project Kyle Dann

Image #1 of 12:

For the fifth week, I decided to take a look at the work that Colin Aiken makes. Colin takes a simple photograph, where light has been captured from a camera, which causes a latent image to be created. The process and tools used just like the ones in Colin's pictures, are also used on most photographs you have seen. The tools are used over and over again until the picture is "destroyed". The original picture is pretty much gone at this point and is almost unrecognizable. What you see in the images is your own imagination taking over and creating an idea in your head. This is a technique that artists will use to draw attention to the piece. It makes the observer feel connected to the piece to see exactly what they see. Everyone might not see the same things. Different objects or colors will stick out for different people. This is what makes his pieces unique because he is able to get the audience thinking. His photographs have been made to remind us that, in a photograph, we only see what we already know. Our brain has already made up what we want to see. We cannot change the ideas that our mind makes up. Colin takes this picture of this fish and changes it to make you draw your attention to other details of the piece instead of just the fish. You can see the different colors, as well as the different shadows that the fish cast. He uses lots of vibrant colors in his pictures of nature which gives it a unique take on the actual picture.
