Week 5 Research Assignment
This week, I've chosen to write about Marcos Schmidt. Schmidt is a Brazilian-based illustrator and graphic designer, in Sao Jose dos Campos. He is self-taught, while also using his knowledge from past architecture and art classes he's taken. His work is mostly painting-based, and then using Photoshop and Corel Painter to finish it off.
This piece I've chosen, titled Coltrane, shows a painting of saxophonist and jazz legend John Coltrane, as he looks down. I chose this piece, because I love Coltrane's music. I also really like the dark theme that Schmidt has done, with the dark top of a piano on the right of Coltrane. It also represents how Coltrane was in his later years, dark and reserved. The neck strap (That necklace-looking piece on his shirt) implies that he is practicing his instrument, but the actual instrument is nowhere to be seen. The grey stains on his shirt are also very rustic and raw. The mood of this piece is dark and mysterious.
