Week 4 Research Assignment Kyle Dann

For the 4th week, I have decided to take a look at the work that Tom McKeith has done. Tom has a master's in fine arts with a concentration in photography.  He has been doing digital art for about 15 years and has displayed his art in Southern California and in Sacramento, California. He says that many of his ideas come from disparate images that he collected or saw over the years. Tom said that the image entitled 'Hands' (page 06 in this exhibit on MOCA) is an homage to the architect Norman Foster's 'Gherkin', which is a building in London. He loves architecture and feels that the 'Gherkin' is the jewel in the crown of Foster's portfolio. He took a picture of the building and was able to create an image around it. In the piece 'Flying' (page 05 in this exhibit on MOCA) he started with an image of an egg and this led him to Renaissance times, which reminded him of the great artists like Michelangelo and Donatello. He claims this was the time of the birth of new art forms and the introduction of geometry and perspectives. Tom says that the image 'Temple' (page 12 in this exhibit on MOCA) shows little pre-conception involved and is based upon what looked good for him. The image that stood out to me was the very first one on his exhibit because of the bright sun in the background as well as the birds chirping in their nest. I feel like it just reminded me of being front and center when you are young and then as you get older you are able to do everything for yourself. There are not many bright colors in this image but the bright yellow sun and the green trees definitely stand out to me. I feel like the birds flying away represent the older birds that are moving on or even going to get food for the younger birds that cannot fly yet.
