Week 2 Assignment Reagan Franzoni
The artist I chose for week 2 from the Museum of Computer Art is Peggi Wolfe. She is a digital artist from Mississippi who focuses on fractal art. She is best known by Wolfepaw which is how she references her fractal art. She worked at Tulane University Health Science Center in New Orleans and was a medical research scientist for nearly 35 years, working with research on adult bone marrow stem cells. She was working a lot with computers and digital graphics to produce experimental learning skills throughout her career. She enjoyed digital photography a lot and started working around with editing graphic art. She started experimenting with fractals but it was very new so a lot of it was trial and error and experiments. She eventually began downloading every free software for fractals and found herself creating many variations of these digital geometric shapes full of colors and lights.
Wolfe uses several different softwares to produce her fractals such as Adobe Photoshop, Fractal Explorer, Mandelbulb 3D, Apophysis, UltraFractal, JWildfire, and AI generators. With these softwares she combines the digital photography and digital graphics designed on the computer to create her hundreds of fractal art pieces. A lot of her work is inspired by all forms of nature and randomized geometric shapes and lines. She creates designs for business merchandise, board games, video games, kaleidoscopes, tech accessories, apparel, stationary items, etc. She would be able to design pieces for pretty much anything because it’s not really specific towards a subject matter most of the time it's more of background patterns and wall art and designs. A lot of her work looks like it may stem from her work in the medical research field of bone marrow stem cells because fractals can look a lot like cells under a microscope or microbes, etc, so that could also be what inspired some of her art. I think most of her work tells the story of whatever she comes across in nature or whatever company she is working with. The image I chose to attach from her portfolio is an iridescent bubbles fractal. This explores the technique of fractals through its digital art mixed with many abstract shapes, colors, 3-Dimensional designs, and lights. This image looks to be designed using digital photography edited in possibly photoshop, then with the use of some sort of AI generator and a fractal software to randomize the shapes.
