Research Assignment Week 5
For this week's research assignment, I chose to go with the artist Virginia Small. She is a visual artist, cartoonist, illustrator, craftsperson, and writer. She has a master's degree in Community Arts Management from the University of Illinois, a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, and a certificate in Multimedia Design. She is multi-talented and has done so much throughout her career. Virginia grew up an artistic child, always involved with the arts. This carried on into her adulthood as she attended the universities listed above to make it a living, almost a dream come true for her inner child. She also loves the art of story, how you can convey a story through many different mediums and she loves to create through any medium as long as the story is told and reaches the target audience. I really loved how diverse her work was, she has so many different styles. Just by her portfolio alone, you can really tell the passion she has as a creator. The Image I chose to focus on reminded me of outer space, which I really enjoy. Art that has contrast and depth like this image shows always pulls me in, I really love it. Traditionally she is a color pencil artist, but as of a few years ago, she began scanning her drawings into the computer to begin making hybrid forms of art. She uses fractals and several computer programs like Super Blade Pro to complete her art pieces. She noted that she is a visually disabled artist, which I found very interesting. It just shows that disabilities don’t always limit you as a person, and you can still reach high just as she has throughout her career. Below I’ve linked the website where you can read more about her and look at some of her illustrations as well.
