Week One Assignment

The artist I chose for week one is Takayoshi Ueda. Ueda was born in Japan 1969, and currently works and lives in Wakayama, Japan. While studying in an art school in Kyoto, he was deeply intrigued by the monochrome paint software he used while studying there, and later began creating digitally with a computer in 1994! He went on to create these amazing, intricately detailed analog paintings, and had several exhibitions showcasing his works throughout the years. To create these amazing pieces, he combines different media of his artwork together using different materials (drawings, collages, paintings) along with the digital art using the monochrome paint software to get the finalized art pieces.

The piece I have picked below is a limited edition piece of artwork from an exhibition he held in 2010. Ueda says he created this piece based on the concept of "Harmony arising from the aggregation of diverse individuals and unity in dissonance". The characters in his works are based off of a familiar plant or animal while also being "flexible, rich in variety, and highly rigid" as he describes. Once he constructs his collages, they're described as a unique space where harmony and chaos co-exist! That is initially one of the main components as to why this art drew me in. The mixture of different textures and colors against one another is just so striking and intriguing. You can interpret this art in several different ways, from many unique perspectives. From the figures to the animals and plants, and what kinds of emotions live within the artwork.
